A Day Out at Fancott Miniature Railway

Introduction to Fancott Miniature Railway
We recently went with our child LB to the Fancott Miniature Railway. When looking for ideas for days out, the options can feel limited. As parents, we constantly seek places that cater to the unique needs of our child. The Fancott Miniature Railway stands out as an entertaining day out that ensures everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can create and enjoy lasting memories. Here are our reflections of the day for others to consider.
What is Fancott Miniature Railway?
Fancott Miniature Railway is a delightful experience for your little ones! The attraction itself is a charming 7 1/4 inch miniature railway. It is the oldest miniature railway on the grounds of a pub in the UK. The 3/4 mile track is laid in an oval off of the railway station. They accommodate wheelchairs if you contact them beforehand. The train ride is smooth and enjoyable, allowing children to experience the thrill of a ride through picturesque landscapes without feeling anxious or overwhelmed. The grounds are run by a cheerful team of dedicated volunteers.
Where is Fancott?
It is located in the beautiful Bedfordshire countryside just off of Junction 11A of the M1. The railway itself is in the gardens of the Fancott pub near Toddington, Bedfordshire. There is plentiful parking available on site.

The day itself
Upon arriving, we noticed how welcoming and friendly the staff were. They’re trained to assist and understand the specific needs of children with disabilities. This made the visit that much easier for us as parents. Whether you need help boarding the train, accessing facilities, or navigating the site, there is always someone on hand to lend a helping hand.
The surroundings of the railway are equally inviting, with a large garden and grounds. There is plenty of room for exploration. Families can enjoy a picnic under the shade of trees while listening to the fun whistles of the trains gliding by. The pub itself also sells food that can be eaten in the garden. There are sensory-friendly areas where children can engage with nature at their own pace, providing a perfect balance of excitement and relaxation.
The price of a ride on the railway is £3 per journey, with children under the age of 2 travelling for free. There are sometimes multi-ride tickets available – for further information, contact the ticket office. The opening hours can vary by day, so do check the website before travelling.
We called ahead as LB has a wheelchair-style buggy. The staff prepared a special engine (Herbie) and got a specially adapted carriage ready. They then connected LBs buggy to ensure it was secure for his journey! I was able to sit opposite him, with his mum sitting behind us. We went around the track twice in a loop, with plenty to see. LB really enjoyed their sensory tunnel, and there are plenty of small features that are easy to miss the first few times around. The staff checked in before and after to ensure we were comfortable. They also allowed us to have a second trip later in the same afternoon after lunch.

Additional facilities
In addition to the train rides, Fancott Miniature Railway offers engaging activities suitable for a range of abilities. The staff host various workshops and playful activities that encourage creativity and teamwork. They have a website that sets out the events calendar. The vibrant environment is filled with laughter and joy, creating an inclusive space for families.
The pub has a disabled toilet/changing area. This makes it easier for parents/carers to manage their child’s needs throughout the day. The volunteer staff pay attention to small details and show a commitment towards making it a family-friendly destination. Many of the volunteers are related so the family theme is deeply evident!
Conclusion
A day out at the Fancott Miniature Railway is a fun and unique outing. It’s an opportunity for families with disabled children to enjoy an attraction where everyone is included. The trains have a relaxing gentle rhythm. It’s worth restating that the staff were so friendly and really made our day! This charming attraction provided a day filled with joy and wonderful memories. If you’re searching for an inclusive day out, look no further than the Fancott Miniature Railway. You won’t be disappointed!
