A Day of Wonder at Whipsnade Zoo

Introduction to Whipsnade Zoo

Towards the end of the summer, we had the incredible opportunity to visit Whipsnade Zoo. It is located in Bedfordshire in the middle of the Chiltern Hills, so it has great views from almost anywhere in the park. The generous Pepper Foundation had arranged the experience. Our disabled child LB was very excited to spend some quality family time in new surroundings. As we made our way there, I felt a mix of excitement and a touch of nervousness. Would it be accessible enough? Would LB enjoy the experience? Those worries were quickly washed away as we arrived. Whipsnade has many activities that promote and embrace inclusivity.

Upon entering the zoo, we were greeted by friendly staff who provided us with a map and highlighted the accessible pathways. We took a car with us so we could move effectively between the various enclosures. The sprawling grounds of Whipsnade allowed us to explore without feeling rushed, giving us the freedom to stop whenever we needed. There were plenty of facilities that offered space for picnics and rest breaks. We made our way towards the first exhibit, the butterfly house and aquarium. The awe of seeing the animals up close was a magical moment that made the trip worthwhile. LB really loved the colours and the interactivity!

Accessibility friendly

It is quite a large site, and it can take its toll on little legs. If you still occasionally use a pushchair it might be worth taking it just in case. It’s also on the top of a hill and it gets windy up there.  It is a good idea to prepare for multiple weather conditions as it can get quite seasonal!

One of the highlights of our visit was the special needs access provided throughout the zoo. There are plenty of seating areas where we could take breaks. Additionally, there are plenty of changing places facilities where needed. The paths are well-maintained and easy to navigate, which made our journey enjoyable rather than stressful. The layout of the zoo ensures that all families can explore at their own pace, and that is so important when visiting such a vast place.

A fun day out

We missed out on engaging animal talks and feeding sessions due to the weather. The staff however were incredibly accommodating. Throughout the zoo, there are insights and fun facts that captured my child’s imagination.

As the day went on, we enjoyed a lovely picnic under the shade of a tree, watching families and friends create their own memories. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, and it was heartwarming to witness so many different people enjoying a day out together.

Whipsnade Zoo is a hidden gem for families with children of all abilities. It’s a place where both children and adults can connect with nature and the animals that inhabit it. I left the zoo feeling grateful for the experiences we shared and looking forward to our next adventure.

The Great Whipsnade Railway

Another enjoyable feature of Whipsnade is the magic of a steam-hauled railway. This is a unique feature of Whipsnade, and a fun way to see the zoo. You could see elephants, rhinos, camels and deer amongst other creatures. They have a wheelchair accessible carriage and ramps – LB loved hearing the train whistle! The circuit includes a tunnel for a varied sensory experience.

Conclusion

If you’re considering a visit, I highly recommend Whipsnade Zoo as a welcoming space for everyone. It’s more than a day out. As a conservation zoo it’s a celebration of wildlife and an opportunity to bond with our loved ones in a beautifully designed environment. Trust me; you’ll create memories that last a lifetime!
